Following the 2010 earthquake, the Haitian government and other organizations sponsored ‘Building Back Better’, a permanent housing design and construction exhibition. MSAADA partnered with the American Refugee Committee, Dania Foundation, Inc., the Center for Sustainable Building Research of the University of Minnesota, and Thor Construction. This efficient prototypical house design employed both traditional Haitian housing and sustainable design principles such as natural ventilation and illumination. The house design was based on the premise that the building would utilize locally-available materials and be of construction type familiar to the local craftsmen.
