• RENOVATION OF THE CHURCH OF ZION
  • Tharangambadi, Tamil Nadu, India
  • Type: Spiritual
  • Project Area: 200 sq m
  • Completed: 1991

Founded as a Danish colony in the 1600s, Tranquebar (now Tharangambadi) is home to the oldest Protestant Church in India, the Church of Zion. The church’s design is a mix of Dutch Colonial and Indian forms. MSAADA was commissioned to oversee and implement the restoration of this church, completed by an Indian contractor with whom MSAADA had previously partnered for school design/construction projects elsewhere in Tamil Nadu. The extensive renovation work, including replastering of walls and ornamental bandwork and restoring the granite stone floor and wood work, was funded in part by Danida, Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The architectural redesign involved balancing between the Danish funder’s preferences for historical authenticity with the knowledge of the local conditions. For instance, a special type of plaster was created that would fare better in the long-term given the site’s location close to the Bay of Bengal.
